September Twenty-Twenty-One

Oh God, this plague has already lasted so long and taken so much from kids and their teachers, and now pandemic pressures are rising all over again.
God help our kids and their teachers have a safe and strong and beautiful year.

and He took the children in his arms, placed His hands on them and blessed them. -MARK 10:16

God, what a thought:
that You could take our kids in Your arms and touch them, hold them, bless them.
oh how we long for that

We have seen our kids suffer too long
from the strangeness of growing up in a plague,
from worries that they can’t even articulate,
from things they don’t even realize aren’t there.

God, our kids need a school experience that works,
that feeds their growing minds,
and provides safety for body and soul.

Blessed are we, their parents,
who crawl up into Your lap (for we are Your children too)
and ask You God, please come and bring this pandemic to an end.

And in the meantime,
help us keep learning ourselves,
and creatively support them, their schools and their teachers.
that our kids might grow up beautifully,
like You, full of grace and truth.

Take your kid in your arms. in this moment, love is enough. for both of you.

Blessed are we, living in this small space, in these bodies we now inhabit, within the walls of circumstance, in these short years and finite strength, and with these eyes that see only so far. We are fragile, contingent beings.

Yet blessed are we, recognizing that it is our limits as well as our gifts that can shape the natural contours of what is possible, that guide us to what is ours to do.

Blessed are we when it is not our greatness that speaks, but our littleness. For it is our vulnerability that is the truest thing about us, the place where mutual connection is possible, where competition ends and community begins.

And oh how blessed are we in our fragility and dependence and brokenness, knowing that You, O God, hold all things together.

There is no cure for being human…but for each other, we are all good medicine.

Open When You are Missing Home

Anna sent this picture to me last week when she opened one of her "Open When" gifts.... It was so sweet to see that she had put this little photo of our family on her desk that I had given her to open when she was missing home.

The FUN news is that she and 4 other friends made a spontaneous decision this week to fly to Seattle for their fall break in mid-October to spend a couple of days and then drive back to CA. (One of the girls has a car in Bainbridge Island and wants to bring it back to campus, so they are making a road trip of it!) We are so excited that we will get to see Anna sooner than we had thought (as Thanksgiving was going to be the first visit as far as we knew when we dropped her off in August.)

Birthday Monkey

This morning, I was so excited to go decorate the Hutchinson's porch as it was Micah's 13th birthday today.  Before scrolling through the photos below, some background information is needed. :) A family who moved into our neighborhood a few doors down from us this summer was renovating their house, and they put out a bunch of things in the alley that they did not have room for including a giant stuffed monkey that was practically brand new. Jason brought it home thinking we could use it for a random prank, but I knew it would be the perfect addition to the birthday decor for Micah so we have had it saved in our garage for months for this morning's surprise.

Elizabeth found me on her porch still decorating when she came back from her run this morning....

Guys Getaway

While Taylor and I were holding down the fort here at home this weekend, Jason got to have a reunion with some college buddies in Bend, OR. So grateful that they got to have this time together soaking up some time in the mountains together. (and a shout out to Chris and Dan for taking photos and sharing them!)

Fall Equinox Reflection

"I'll admit that the solstice in June and December tend to turn my head more dramatically — the extremes always do.

But it’s the equinox I’m growing more and more fond of.

For one quiet moment in time this week, as the days are shrinking and the nights begin to grow, they met gracefully in the middle.

At 3:21 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the sun cast equal light and equal shadow over the earth, 12 hours each.

Give us equanimity in this mad and beautiful world.

Bring to us the quiet stillness of balance.

Show us the gift of both the darkness and the light.

Happy first week of autumn.

May the Spirit of God calm us and be our peace on this day of equilibrium."

GLAD

When talking to Dani this week, she mentioned the acronym, "GLAD" which stands for naming 1) something you are grateful for today, 2)something you learned today, 3) one small accomplishment you did today, and 4) something that brought you delight today.

I just had to share these pictures of art I saw online that someone did on a sidewalk that brought me such delight:

Disco Day

This week is spirit week at Roosevelt High School, and last night, Taylor told me that today was Disco Day. I pulled out this option for him to try out of our costume box, and the dress up moment was hilarious. He decided against wearing it to school today as it seemed a bit much, but these pictures are priceless.
