September Twenty-Seventeen

September Twenty- Seventeen

The following reflection is an offering by Jan Richardson called
"Beloved is Where we Begin" from her book Circle of Grace:

If you would enter
into the wilderness,
do not begin
without a blessing.

Do not leave
without hearing who you are:
Beloved,
named by the One
who has traveled this path
before you.

Do not go
without letting it echo
in your ears,
and if you find
it is hard
to let it into your heart,
do not despair.
That is what
this journey is for.

I cannot promise
this blessing will free you
from danger,
from fear,
from hunger,
or thirst,
from the scorching
of sun
or the fall
of the night.

But I can tell you
that on this path
there will be help.

I can tell you
that on this way
there will be rest.

I can tell you
that you will know
the strange graces
 that come to our aid
only on a road
such as this,

that fly to meet us
bearing comfort
and strength,
that come alongside us
for no other cause
than to lean themselves
toward our ear
with their
curious insistence
whisper our name:

Beloved.
Beloved.
Beloved.

dare to have hope

These pictures popped up today from 8 years ago on September 28, 2009.  There's something about these little faces that hold such hope and promise....

This morning, I read this prayer that my friend Leoma Giley from Knoxville wrote below. I look at the hope in these pictures, and then think about the aches that life can bring that can erode that hope at times. But Leoma wisely asks that God would enable us to DARE to have hope.
I love that-- because it is a dare in the face of the darkness.
But let's do it.
Let's keep hoping because we know that this is not the end of the story
and because we know there is a Love that does not let us go.

Runny Babbit

a new Shel Silverstein book that came in a care package today from Janie-- yippee!

skeptical that Poppy will actually read this book---
most likely, if we were careless and left it out, she would eat it.

still in love with this bunny after all these years!
(it's almost been 4 years...)

Grocery Shopping with Kids

Even with children ages 14 and 12, it still can be a costly thing to bring Anna and Taylor with me to the grocery as things get put in the cart that were not on the grocery list. :)

lunch snacks (giant boxes of goldfish and cheez-its) picked out by the offspring

Education on the Emmaus Road

At the SPU faculty retreat, the speaker had a slide in his talk titled "Education on the Emmaus Road."
His point was that our students may not recognize Jesus at first just like the two men did not recognize Him on the road to Emmaus, but that our classes can be open doors as we invite them to encounter God's love.

One article that I found that complimented the speaker's talk said the following:
"The journey to Emmaus began with Jesus as a stranger to the disciples. Then as the they went on the road, the stranger slowly became a travelling companion  And when they finally reach their destination, the stranger — the travelling companion —becomes a friend. The two disciples invite Jesus to stay with them. The two are cognizant of the dangers of travelling at night. They open their hearts to their companion and  show him their concern. Hence, a relationship, a friendship, is born."

The objective then is that those we encounter in our classes (or in our homes for that matter)
would meet Jesus in those places as the point really is more about transformation than about information. May it be so for us and for our students as our school year kicks off today!

Below are pictures of some of my students...  I am praying that they are finding God's love more real because of the time we spend together.

And may the Master pour on the love so it fills your lives and splashes over on everyone around you, just as it does from us to you. May you be infused with strength and purity, filled with confidence in the presence of God our Father when our Master Jesus arrives with all his followers.  1 Thessalonians 3:11-13

best concert ever

Last night, we got to go to the Coldplay concert at Century Link field downtown in Seattle, and Jason and I agreed that this is the BEST concert we have ever been to. Chris Martin and his team must have had a blast planning all the surprises in the show as it was one of the most fun, whimsical, colorful and creative experiences to witness and be a part of.  We were given LED wristbands upon entering the stadium, and these lit up at different times to create a stunning light show during the concert. There were fireworks, giant balloons, and confetti shaped like butterflies, birds and stars falling from the sky at multiple times as well to add to the sensory overload.  I am not sure how it would be possible to leave that place without doing a happy dance and without a euphoric smile.  What a fabulous night!

We did not take the two pictures above but all the rest below were from our phones.

how Taylor and I felt about the opening band....

how we felt about Coldplay

look how close were were to the stage at one point!

Anna tracked down a friend from school (Hayley) before the show :)
