February Twenty-Twenty One

“God is always there, if you feel wounded. He kneels over the earth like a divine medic, and His love thaws the holy in us.” -Teresa of Avila

“God does not give up on anyone, for God loved us from all eternity, God loves us now and God will always love us, all of us good and bad, forever and ever. [God’s] love will not let us go, for God’s love for us, all of us, good and bad, is unchanging, is unchangeable. Someone has said there is nothing I can do to make God love me more, for God loves me perfectly already. And wonderfully, there is nothing I can do to make God love me less." -Desmond Tutu, No Future Without Forgiveness

“When we live with hope we do not get tangled up with concerns for how our wishes will be fulfilled. So, too, our prayers are not directed toward the gift but toward the One who gives it. Ultimately, it is not a question of having a wish come true but of expressing an unlimited faith in the giver of all good things. . . . Hope is based on the premise that the other gives only what is good. Hope includes an openness by which you wait for the promise to come through, even though you never know when, where, or how this might happen…” - Henri Nouwen

“Watch not the bitter earth, but the starry sky….” -Andrew Greeley

I cannot tell you
how the light comes,
but that it does.
That it will.
- Jan Richardson, “How The Light Comes”

I stumbled onto the following words this morning and thought they would encourage you as they did me. Opening the curtains in the morning once it is light, especially this time of year, often feels like a declaration of hope against the dark that I need everyday. These are words to rest as we remember we don’t have to have all the answers or how to make it all better. We just make a way for God’s light of day to shine on us and sustain us. -Tracey Cravy
“ When you open the curtains in the morning, do you have to make the sun shine into your room? No, you open the curtains and the sun shines in. That's what it's like with God's peace and the hope that He brings. It will flow into our hearts, if we let it. Are you worried? Are you anxious? Is anything troubling you today? Don't try to work it out all by yourself. Let God's peace flow in – like sunshine into a dark room.” -Sally Lloyd Jones

dancing at a wedding

Our sweet neighbor Jessica Petrie got married in Colorado today with just her family and her husband's family attending in person, and we got to attend via a live broadcast. Anna was in dance class, but we loved getting to watch together in the midst of her relevés for ballet class. I loved it when Anna told her teacher she would be turning her camera off during the vows so we could focus and listen in to celebrate the big moment with Jess and Ben!

in Telluride, CO- could it be more picturesque?!

Faithful Study Buddy

Anna has the most faithful study buddy in the world as Poppy often sits at her feet while she is working away at the computer at the dining room table. I think she needs a little graduation cap this spring for how much she has supported Anna through this wild senior year!

Homemade Doughnuts

Anna and Taylor brought home VooDoo doughnuts last week from Portland-- one of which (chocolate, peanut butter and Oreo) was inhaled in a matter of moments. Since this was such a hit, we decided to try to make them yesterday for Taylor's 23rd, and we nailed it in the air fryer that we got this winter since Taylor, Josiah and Halle have been doing so much cooking. Here's the recipe to try: (https://platedcravings.com/air-fryer-donuts/). Whip these up and then you can add your own toppings of choice (but we personally think that Oreos make everything better!)

So Much Has Changed Since This Time Last Year

Anna and I are taking a break midday to read a short passage out of a book and then we are taking a walk around the block everyday together for Lent. I am so grateful for the break in the day from being at my desk all day, and I am so grateful for the sweet time with her! Today on our walk, we stopped when the sun pierced through the clouds and soaked it in.

Blue Eyes

On the porch the other night, we were praising the presence of the disco ball above us, and Anna popped her head in this funny photo below. Sure love these blue eyes.

This picture above reminded me of this children's book cover and of this picture from a swimming day in Nashville when she was little.

Earth hour

This was a post I wrote up last spring from the night when Anna turned out all the lights in our house for Earth Hour and made it beautiful with candlelight.  Oops! This stayed in my draft box and I just now found it.  Hard to believe we are almost another year around the sun....

I dug this out tonight, and I'm grateful for the ways that Anna leads by example and how she teaches us and makes the world a better place.

Every year, at 8:30 pm on the last Saturday of March, millions of people across the world join in raising awareness of the issues facing our planet. This year that date falls on March 27th....

Prized Porch

I've talked often about the wonderful Barbara Brown Taylor question, "What is saving your life right now?" and I think that the answer I would say right now is our front porch. We are so grateful for this space that has allowed us to see friends and stay connected with people safely through the pandemic. See below from some beautiful faces that graced our front porch this weekend.

happy hour Jed on Friday

small group gathering on Saturday
(4 of our group are vaccinated--- so excited for the day when all of us will be in that boat so that we can one day gather again indoors!  Next winter, we may just have to pull out the heaters and meet here on the beloved porch for old times sake. :)

Road Trip

It's mid-winter break for Anna and Taylor, and so they headed out on a road trip to Portland and back yesterday for some good sibling bonding (not to mention some VooDoo doughnuts and a few fun finds at some thrift stores). ❤
