When I bake with Liam or Micah, it's inevitable that we pick a recipe on the spot and we don't always have all the ingredients. So, we google substitutions often. The funniest story was when I did not have flour at our house when Micah came over to bake one afternoon, but we did have pancake mix. It wasn't quite the same and looked like chocolate goop, but it still tasted pretty amazing.
On Sunday, I went over to the Hutchinson's house before small group to bake with Liam, and he found a recipe for salted caramel cupcakes. We were set until we got to the icing part. It called for powdered sugar, but we only had granulated sugar. Google told us that we could add cornstarch to regular sugar and blend them together for a substitution for powdered sugar. Well, let's just say that it wasn't quite the same, and we had some good laughs. I'm so grateful for these times to connect over a spoonful of sugar together (even when we don't have the right kind of sugar!).
