A friend of mine from church wrote this poem for Ash Wednesday, and I loved is so much that I wrote the words "beloved dust" on my hand today:
Grounded
Remember you are dust
Carefully and tenderly crafted
From the Ground of Creation
Deeply loved
Remember the the kiss of God’s Breath
Filling your mouth, your lungs, giving you
Life
Remember breathing with God
Long and slow and steady breaths
Deep with delight
Breathe in goodness and grace
Breathe out generosity and love and
compassion
Remember you are dust
Carefully and tenderly crafted
Deeply loved
When that breath comes only in gasps of pain
and injustice and loss
You are not alone
Remember Jesus, born of dust and God
Growing and laughing and teaching and healing
Pouring out Life
Yet gasping and breathing his last
Awakening to New Creation,
The kiss of God’s breath once again
Filling mouth and lungs,
Giving Life to all
Inviting us to follow him.
Remember you are dust.
Beloved Dust.
