Anna and I went to a production of Rent that one of my students was in on Thursday night in Renton. The director wrote this in the program which I thought was so beautiful:
"Rent is a musical about a community of artists- a collection of dreams, desires, broken hearts, and regrets. They're fighters. They're lovers. They are overwhelmed with love and the fear of losing love. They're brittle, strong, hurting, dying, living, thriving. They're full of pain, fear, anxiety, resilience, ambition, humor. Unrelenting pressure breeds chaos. They keep going, They run on stolen joy and borrowed time.
I invite you to experience Rent from the center of your own vulnerability. I invite you to take in how fragile the toughest of us are, and after this shared moment, I encourage you to re-enter old spaces with renewed desire to love your people- through both your brokenness and theirs. We all run on stolen joy and borrowed time. None of it is ours to keep. There is "no day but today."
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty five thousand moments so dear
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure? Measure a year?
In daylights,
In sunsets,
In midnights,
In cups of coffee,
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife
In five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure a year in a life?
How about love?
How about love?
How about love?
Measure in love…
Seasons of love…
Seasons of love…
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty five thousand journeys to plan
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure a life of a woman or a man?
In truths that she learned
Or in times that she cried
In bridges he burned
Or the way that she died
Its time now to sing out though
The story never ends
Let’s celebrate remember a year in a life
Of friends
Remember the love…
(Oh you gotta remember the love)
Remember the love…
(Oh yeah, its a gift from up above)
Remember the love…
(Sing out, give out, measure your life, In love…!)
Seasons of love…
Seasons of love…
