We had Natalie Zimmer over for dinner last night and it was such a treat to see her. It's hard to believe that this girl is a senior in college now! When she came over, Taylor had been working on his homework and had gotten pretty frustrated. Natalie's timing was perfect as it was a good distraction for him to take a break from the downward spiral he found himself going into.
I have this quote in our kitchen about guests:
"All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ, for he himself will say 'I was a stranger and you welcomed me.'" - St. Benedict
And the thing I think about when I read this is that while we open our doors and gather around our table with folks and hope to be a blessing to them, it is our guests who present themselves as Christ to us. We are the ones blessed. Last night, Natalie came over and ate a really simple meal of lasagna and salad with us. She brought a breath of fresh air into our home, and she was indeed good medicine for the evening.
Later on, there was a bit more frustration over homework before bedtime so perhaps I should have asked Natalie to spend the night. :)
We sure are thankful for the guests God sends our way. May we always keep open house!
