October Twenty-Twenty

“O extravagant God, in this ripening, red-tinged autumn, waken in me a sense of joy in just being alive, joy for nothing in general except everything in particular; joy in sun and rain mating with earth to birth a harvest; joy in soft light through shyly disrobing trees; joy in acolyte moon setting halos around processing clouds; joy in the beating of a thousand wings mysteriously knowing which way is warm; joy in wagging tails and kids’ smiles and in this spunky old city; joy in the taste of bread and wine, the smell of dawn, a touch, a song, a presence; joy in having what I cannot live without — other people to hold and cry and laugh with joy in love, in you; and that all at first and last is grace.”

Anna's 2020 Half Marathon

Happy Halloween 2020!

“Eternal Friend, grant me an ease to breathe deeply of this moment, this light,
this miracle of now. Beneath the din and fury of great movements and harsh news and urgent crises, make me attentive still to good news, to small occasions, and the grace of what is possible for me to be, to do, to give, to receive, that I may miss neither my neighbor’s gift nor my enemy’s need. Precious Lord, grant me a sense of humor that adds perspective to compassion, gratitude that adds persistence to courage, quietness of spirit that adds irrepressibility to hope, openness of mind that adds surprise to joy; that with gladness of heart I may link arm and aim with the One who saw signs of your kingdom in salt and yeast, pearls and seeds, travelers and tax collectors, sowers and harlots, foreigners and fishermen, and open my eyes with these signs and my ears with the summons to follow to something more of justice and joy.” —Ted Loder, Guerrillas of Grace

On the Night Before Halloween

Anna's friends from the Edge gathered on our front porch for a potluck.....
They had a great time and then all left around 9:30 as some of them are still wrapping up college applications (early decision applications are due on 11/1!).... So proud of these amazing girls!

Wheel of Candy 2020

This year, Poppy is the only one who will get to spin our beloved Wheel of Candy since we will only be putting candy in bags out on the sidewalk and on our stairs for any kids who might come by this year. Glad she got the vegetables....

Happy Unbirthday

The term “un-birthday” was coined by Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking Glass. It’s a day that’s celebrated on any or all of the 364 days on which it's not the person's birthday.
Now, statistics prove, prove that you've one birthday
Imagine, just one birthday every year
Ah, but there are three hundred and sixty four un-birthdays!
Precisely why we're gathered here to cheer

I've put together 18 little gifts as a countdown to Anna's 18th birthday....
Here is the gift I gave her yesterday.....
Such good words for all ages!

"Don't Forget To Remember"

Did you know Creation is talking to you?
Wherever you go and whatever you do?
God will keep giving you clue after clue
So you won't forget to remember what's true

Like every day when the sun rises high
The warmth that you feel is God's love by your side
Oh, and just like the birds who keep humming their tune
Remember God sings songs of joy over you!

Don't forget to remember you're never alone
No matter if you are up high or down low
And as sure as the sun will keep rising above
Don't forget to remember that you're dearly loved

And when you catch the snowflakes that fall from the sky
Don't forget to remember you're one of a kind
And after the winter and cold are all through
The flowers remind you God makes all things new

Don't forget to remember you're never alone
No matter if you are up high or down low
And as sure as the sun will keep rising above
Don't forget to remember that you're dearly loved

So just like the stars won't forget how to shine
Don't forget to remember that all of the time
God's light will guide you wherever you go
And you're loved from the top of your head to your toes

Let the whole earth remind you of what God has said
From the moment you wake up 'till you go to bed
Oh and even on days you forget what is true
Don't forget to remember, God won't forget you

AP Photography Assignment

Anna and her friend Lindsay are in AP Photography this year, and they went to UW Sunday afternoon to knock out an assignment.  These are a few of the ones that Lindsay took of Anna. They are both learning some very cool Photoshop skills as you can see below--

notice the way Lindsay spliced two pictures together

Senior Picture Sneak Peek

Today, we went to the Arboretum for Anna's senior pictures. David Cho was our photographer, and he was one of Jason's former students at Lindbergh High School many moons ago with whom he reconnected recently.  David said it felt like it was coming full circle to get to photograph Anna in her senior year (as that is when he had Jason as a teacher).  He did a fabulous job and his photos will be much better than mine, but here are a few that I snapped during the photo shoot.  She's gorgeous!

Soaking up the Sunshine

We went to Union today for a small chilly outdoor communion service and appreciated the chance to be outside and to see a few familiar faces. After the service, we went downtown to grab some brunch and were so happy to have a few minutes to soak up the sun (knowing that Gingie and Dan & Tracey all got snow this past weekend!).
