September Twenty-Twenty

God of all beings, a lot of us feel less safe than we did a few days ago and a few days ago we weren’t feeling that secure to begin with. Help us draw upon you, our Divine Source, when what we have just isn’t enough to get through the day.

A lot of us are grieving. Actually, all of us are grieving: lost friends, lost kin, lost homes, lost income, lost connection to others, lost health.  Help us not also lose hope. We can lose a lot and still survive, but not that.

A lot of us are so angry. Angry that our inherent worth and dignity seems up for debate by those who have never had their worth and dignity questioned in courts of law. Angry that love of power seems to trump love of neighbor. Repurpose our anger into righteous action, Lord.

(Personal note: My fear is turning to anger and I am afraid that my anger can turn so easily to hate and hate is the thing I say I am against. Turn me away from hate. My heart can’t take that kind of brittleness because I need it to give and to receive love. Remind me that my heart is spoken for.)

A lot of us are ashamed of how numb we feel, but honestly we’ve run out of emotional bandwidth and the system needs to re-boot before it comes back on-line. Give us rest and self-compassion.

A lot of us are joyous and feel like we have to shield that joy from others, lest it seem like we are callous toward those who are hurting. Help us see and celebrate what good there is in our lives and the lives of those around us.

I don't think you created us to be able to metabolize such a constant stream of bad news everyday, Lord. But I do know that you created us to metabolize cookies. And for that I give you thanks and praise. They are helping. But they are not enough.

So if you could show up right now, that would be great. And if you are already showing up, give us new eyes to notice you.

Amen.

Work Outfits

When I came to SPU to teach and to work in my office today, I wore a nice dress and felt like a real working woman; however, these photos below show some pretty great Zoom outfits.

silk red and blue top thrown over running shorts for a Zoom meeting

work jeans from the project when I was painting the giant letters over the last few weeks paired with a Banana Republic blouse for another great Zoom look.

Hooray!

Over the last three weekends, I have been getting a break from my computer and from the heaviness of the world all around us by working on a project of creating some signs for our yard for celebrations in the year ahead. I borrowed a jigsaw from Dad's wood shop when we were there in August and have made 3 trips to Home Depot to get wood and the right spray paint to make these along with a trip to Hobby Lobby to buy a giant tub of gold glitter.

Here are pictures of the letters that spell out "Hooray!" and these will be stored alongside the ones that spell "Happy Birthday" for Anna's 18th, Jason's 50th and Taylor's 16th in the year ahead.

Sweet Surprise

I woke up to this very sweet surprise outside the bedroom door this morning, and then I found the culprit downstairs....

Success!

Grateful to report that Taylor was successful with his first ramp jumps and that there were no visits to the ER last night.  Photo and video below compliments of Josiah who witnessed the feat.

Ramped Up

Taylor and Jason finished their project today of building a bike ramp. It is so very cool and I love that they have had so much fun bonding together over this project. But let's just say that I've made it clear that I really really don't want to go to the ER anytime soon.....

testing it out (not going all the way over)

Link Crew

Anna got out the green and gold glitter today to lead a group online for freshmen. She is a part of Link Crew this year which is a national high school transition program that welcomes 9th graders and makes them feel welcome through their first year of school.

Can't think of a better role model or cheerleader for new freshmen trying
to navigate the first year of high school online!

UDistrict Bike Ramp

Taylor has been very resourceful in our neighborhood with the castoff items left in the median from college students who are moving in and out of places on 17th Ave NE.  He made a very cool ramp out of a wooden chest and a board he found, and he had so much fun yesterday afternoon perfecting his jumps.
