It all started when we went down to Portland for my marathon. We stayed with our good friends, the Clarks, and while we were there, Anna found this collapsable ball in their basement on a shelf with some other toys. When she opened it up and got inside it, Elizabeth said, "You could be a disco ball for Halloween!" Anna latched onto the idea and decided this was her destiny for Halloween 2013.
We began scheming and researching online to find some ways to make a disco ball.
Some of them were quite extensive and really expensive to make like these below.
Then we found a simple design for how to make a ball costume with a giant 36 inch balloon and some paper mache. For the cost of $3.50 for the balloon, lots of muscle for the bike pump to blow it up, and a bag of flour to make the paper mache, we went to work.

At one point, I told Anna I was not sure if this was going to work as folks had warned me that it might collapse if we don't have enough layers. We talked about other possibilities, but she was determined to give it her best shot and we kept on working on the layering through the week.
I took the ball outside to let it sit in the sun yesterday,
but when I came home, the balloon had popped inside the paper mache shell.
It could have been that the temperature difference from inside to outside was different enough that this did the trick of causing it to pop.
Nevertheless, all was well and the paper mache was solid enough that it held the form. We were able to cut the top and the bottom last night for her head and body.

We decided that it was funnier to not have her arms sticking out so I will be her chaperone to collect candy for her since she will not be able to hold her own candy bag!
