It all started with an innocent email.
Jodi (my dear friend in Oregon whom I have known since 1993 in college days) sent Anna an email wishing her a "Happy Birthday" last week. She ended the email with the note: "I hope you get a bunny." I emailed her back thanking her for the birthday greetings and telling her that while Anna has been begging for a bunny for a year now, we have told her that it would have to wait as we have a big project coming up in the new year of working on our basement. I told Jodi that unless she knew of an offer that I could not refuse that sweet Anna would just have to wait and work on patience. Jodi then responded that she did indeed have an offer I could not refuse now that I had mentioned it. They had 3 bunnies last year, but two of them were eaten recently by one of their dogs and they only had one bunny left. She and Kate (to whom the bunny belonged… and who is Anna's age and who is a sweet friend to her) talked about it a lot last week and decided that they wanted to give the bunny to Anna for a belated birthday gift. With chickens, goats, dogs (with 5 children too), they figured that this bunny would get more attention here as an urban bunny in Seattle. When she told me, I was floored!! This bunny is the exact bunny that Anna has been hoping for, and they were going be be here in Seattle this weekend to visit Jodi's sister. That meant that we would basically have a bunny delivered to our doorstep (with an awesome cage and full set up for taking care of this little creature.) Talk about an offer that we could not refuse!!
So the day finally arrived today and we were so excited. We knew that Anna had no idea this was coming! She knew that Jodi and her family were coming for lunch, but she had no idea beyond that. When they got here today, we blindfolded Anna and had her come down the stairs. Kate held out the bunny for Anna to touch when she sat down. Anna later told me that she thought it was their bunny but she just thought Kate had brought it for her to see. She had no idea that Kate was giving it to her to keep! The bunny's name is Poppy, and we agree that there could not be a more perfect name!!
You can imagine the day that Anna had as it unfolded! Such a HUGE SURPRISE!! This bunny has been given lots of love today- thankfully, Poppy is used to being held and she does not seem to mind sitting in laps for large chunks of time. This evening when I was making dinner, Taylor stretched out a towel in the kitchen for Poppy and brought down a stack of books for her. He read three books to her, fed her kale and tomatoes, and pet her for a long time.
As I tucked Anna into bed tonight, I asked her how she was doing with this whole thing and she said that she felt "AMAZED, EXCITED, GRATEFUL, HAPPY AND SHOCKED!"
We are delighted to welcome Poppy into our family. Many thanks to Jodi and Kate for sharing this amazing gift with us from their family to ours!
